The 83rd edition of the storied DS Automobiles 83° Open d'Italia (Italian Open) is upon us as the DP World Tour returns from a three-week hiatus for the U.S. Open.

This is a nomadic event that will be played at a different golf course for the fourth consecutive season.

Last year, the event was held at the Argentario Golf Club in Monte Argentario. Prior to that, it was held at the Adriatic Golf Club in Cerviaheld in 2024 and at the 2023 Ryder Cup venue, Marco Simone Golf and Country Club in 2023.

This year, the Circolo Golf Torino in Fiano, Torino will play host for the first time since 2014. It also hosted this event in 2013 and 1999.

This week marks the penultimate event of the Tour’s ‘European Swing.’

The Field

The long awaited return of current Race to Dubai Standings leader, Patrick Reed, is here as he is set to tee it up in Italy this week. Reed last played on the DP World Tour in March for the Joburg Open.

With the uncertainty of the LIV Golf Tour still circling, many of its stars will be making the trip to Italy this week. That list includes Joaquin Niemann, Jose Luis Ballester, David Puig, Branden Grace, Elvis Smylie, Tom McKibbin and Thomas Detry.

Notable DP World Tour regulars teeing it up this week include Casey Jarvis, Eugenio Chacarra, Andy Sullivan, Dan Bradbury, Mikael Lindberg, Daniel Hillier, Brend Wiesberger, Julien Guierrer, Kota Kaneko and Oliver Lindell.

Although at a different venue, Adrien Saddier comes in as the defending champion, having topped fellow countryman Martin Couvra by two strokes a season ago. He’ll be back this week to defend his title.

The Course

The Circolo Golf Torino Blue Course, one of Italy’s most prestigious championship layouts, will take center stage this week.

The course was designed by Englishman John Morrison in 1956. The venue is routed through the ancient hunting grounds of the Savoy royal family.

It is laid out amongst slightly undulating terrain, bordered by towering ancient oak trees.

It plays as a par-72 at 7,2010 yards

Circolo Golf Torino was renovated by Canadian architect Graham Cook in preparation for the 1999 Italian Open. In preparation to host the national open, many of the holes were redesigned. It also hosted the Italian Open in both 2013 and 2014.

Off-the-tee, golfers will be faced with a multitude of strategically placed bunkers as well as water that comes into play on ten-of-the-eighteen holes this week. The fairways are also narrow and tightly lined.

After navigating the trees, bunkers and water, the rough here at Circolo Golf Torino is lush and will be almost impossible to produce the proper ball flight, spin or distance out of.

The greens are known to be both firm and fast at the Circolo Golf Torino and are described as the “defining feature” of this golf course.

Proper landing areas on approach for these greens are also small and precise, demanding an accurate shot to hold them.

Around-the-green, golfers will be faced with delicate run-off-areas and deep green-side bunkers.

Everything we talked about is on display at the 171-yard par-three 13th. The hole features a raised green that is framed on three sides by trees and is protected by both sand and water on the front.

The Weather

As of writing this, we can expect some warm temperatures this week, some very warm temperatures. Temperatures are set at a high of 97-degrees on Thursday before falling to 96-degrees on Friday and 95-degrees for both Saturday and Sunday. Thursday, Friday and Saturday are calling for a 25-percent chance of precipitation as Sunday is calling for a 35-percent chance of evening thunderstorms. Winds are currently set at just six miles-per-hour across all four days.

Betting Card

Thomas Detry (+2500)

I tried my best to escape my preparation without betting Detry but everything kept coming back to him. On limited starts on the DP World Tour, he is currently second on Tour in par-five average scoring, fourth in sand saves percentage, 14th in SG: OTT, 29th in scrambling, 35th in SG: ATG, 42nd in SG: APP, 62nd in SG: PUTT, 75th in birdie-or-better percentage and 102nd in driving accuracy percentage. He last played the LIV Golf Andalucia where he finished T5th. He placed 41st at LIV Golf Korea, T6th at LIV Golf Virginia, T5th at LIV Golf Mexico City, T3rd at LIV Golf South Korea, T15th at LIV Golf Singapore and second at LIV Golf Hong Kong. On the LIV Golf Tour, Detry trails just Jon Rahm in terms of average finishing placement across the season. He last played on the DP World Tour at the Soudal Open where he placed T53rd.

Oliver Lindell (+4000)

I’ve been waiting a long time to bet Lindell but the odds are always too short. He’s been in great form all season long. As of late he placed second in his latest start at the KLM Open. He also placed 47th at the Austria Alpine Open, 30th at the Soudal Open, and tenth at the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship as of late. Although at a different course, he placed tenth at this event a season ago. Lindell is currently seventh on Tour in SG: ATG, 18th in birdie-or-better percentage, 22nd in SG: APP, 25th in par-five average scoring, 40th in scrambling, 46th in sand saves percentage, 53rd in SG: PUTT, 63rd in SG: OTT and 71st in driving accuracy percentage.

Dan Bradbury (+6500)

Again, at different golf courses, Bradbury placed third last season and tenth in 2024 at this golf event. It may seem that something about Italian golf triggers something in him. He is currently 13th on Tour in par-five average scoring, 16th in SG: APP, 17th in birdie-or-better percentage, 23rd in SG: OTT, 37th in driving accuracy percentage, 48th in sand saves percentage, 75th in SG: ATG, 102nd in scrambling and 108th in SG: PUTT. Bradbury has been a very sporadic golfer this season. He won the Joburg Open after missing both cuts at the Investec South African Open Championship and the Magical Kenya Open. He placed fifth at the Qatar Masters prior to those missed cuts. He most recently placed 65th at the KLM Open but prior to that placed sixth at the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship.

Martin Couvra (+6800)

Couvra at this price may be the best value on the entire board. He is currently 12th on Tour in scrambling, 20th in SG: ATG, 22nd in SG: OTT, 25th in sand saves percentage, 49th in par-five average scoring, 53rd in birdie-or-better percentage, 63rd in driving accuracy percentage, 69th in SG: PUTT and 74th in SG: APP. He missed the cut in his latest outing at the KLM Open. Prior to that he placed 35th at the Austria Alpine Open, 24th at the Soudal Open, tenth at the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship and 43rd at the Turkish Airlines Open across his last five events. He of course was the runner-up at this event a season ago.

JC Ritchie (+8000)

I sat long and hard about who to put on this betting card simply because Ritchie ranked so high in my stats-based model. Ritchie is currently 11th on Tour in scrambling, 21st in birdie-or-better percentage, 33rd in SG: PUTT, 36th in both SG: APP and sand saves percentage, 46th in SG: ATG, 66th in par-five average scoring, 74th in SG: OTT and 85th in driving accuracy percentage. He most recently played at the KLM Open where he placed 45th. He placed 17th prior at the Austrian Alpine Open, missed the cut at the Soudal Open, placed third at the Estrella Damm Catalunya Championship and ninth at the Turkish Airlines Open.
