Omitted from the 2025 PGA Tour schedule due to wild-fires in the area, The Genesis Invitational returns to Riviera Country Club for this year’s installment.
Last year’s event was held at Torrey Pines Golf Course, three weeks after the tour had played the Farmers Insurance Open at the very same venue.
The Genesis Invitational serves as the second-of-eight Signature Events of the season, with last week’s AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am serving as the first.
Riviera Country Club in Los Angeles, California returns as the host as it is one of the most iconic venues the PGA Tour schedule has to offer. It’s no easy task by any measure, but one we as fans look forward to each year.
This event is hosted by Tiger Woods, who prior to his most recent injuries, had played this event as early as 2024. Woods has served as the host since 2020 when the event changed from an open to its now invitational tag. The introduction of both the rebranding to an invitational and the welcoming of Woods as its host has given this already prestigious event a facelift.
This is actually where Woods made his professional debut in 1992 and although we can list the endless accolades of his career, winning at Riviera Country Club is not one of them.
The Field
Being a Signature Event, all of the PGA Tour’s biggest names will turn out to Los Angeles this week in hopes of claiming the $3.5 million share of the $20 million purse.
The field is set at 70-golfers. To qualify, golfers must:
Top-50 of the FedEx Cup Standings from the 2025 season
Aon Next 10 (Fall Series standings)
Leading finisher from the DP World Tour Race to Dubai
Aon Swing 5 (through the WM Phoenix Open)
Sponsor exemptions
FedExCup Fall Points List
Each of the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) top ten will be in attendance this week, headlined by World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler.
Rory McIlroy (No. 2,) Justin Rose (No. 3,) Tommy Fleetwood (No. 4,) Chris Gotterup (No. 5,) Russell Henley (No. 6,) J.J. Spaun (No. 7,) Robert MacIntyre (No. 8,) Ben Griffin (No. 9) and Xander Schauffele (No. 10) will be teeing it up this week.
Ludvig Aberg comes in as the defending champion, although having won on Torrey Pines a season ago.
Hideki Matsuyama put on a final-round masterclass at this event in 2024, winning the latest installment at Riviera Country Club in 2024. Matsuyama topped both Lust List and Will Zalatoris by three strokes.
Other former winners of this event playing this week include Max Homa (2021) and Adam Scott (2020 & 2005.)
The Course
Riviera Country Club is simply a beautiful golf oasis and architectural masterpiece, carefully crafted into the cityscape of Los Angeles.
At 7,322 yards and par-71, Riviera’s distance doesn’t jump off the page, but the compact course sure does offer its challenges. A well rounded game will be needed as scoring will be held in check this week.
Even on the best of days, Riviera presents one of the most challenging courses we’ll see across the sport.
To put into perspective how daunting this course can be, the cut line for the last decade has been over par.
The first of its defenses are extremely narrow fairways that progressively get narrower the closer to the green. On top of the fairways being extremely narrow, the course too is littered with tight doglegs.
Due to this, Riviera ranks in the bottom two courses in average driving accuracy every year since 2015.
The high missed fairway percentage also plays into the fact that Riviera offers one of the lowest greens in regulation percentage on Tour annually as well.
Once a golfer misses the fairways, they’ll have to battle the unpredictable Kikuyu rough, which tends to “stick” to the club.
With such challenges facing golfers before they even get off-the-tee, even the best off -the-tee will be forced to think twice before “letting it rip '' and will oftentimes be forced to lay up along the way. This removes wedge shots more common on easier layouts. Roughly 75-percent of approach shots come from beyond 150 yards.
The course too offers a good amount of elevation change and is heavily bunkered; both around the fairways and around the green.
Once to the green, the challenges don’t go away. The greens are a tricky, fast and firm Poa that is destined to give even the best with the flat stick fits.
The course ranks in the top five for most missed putts both inside and outside 15 feet.
Don’t let the first hole get you too excited when tuning in this week either, as the downhill par five plays as the easiest par five on Tour. A bit of a mind game this course can add to its seamlessly endless list of defenses.

Tommy Fleetwood (+2200)
Fleetwood made his 2026 PGA Tour debut last week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where he finished fourth. Prior to that, he spent the early portion of the calendar year competing on the DP World Tour in Dubai. He placed T41st at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and 25th at the Dubai Invitational. Although a small sample size, Fleetwood is currently first on Tour in all three of scrambling, bogey avoidance and par-four average scoring, second in SG: ATG, 14th in sand saves percentage, 21st in SG: APP, 33rd in good drives percentage, 37th in GIR%, 59th in SG: PUTT Poa and 164th in proximity to the hole from 150-plus yards. He’s played this event at Riviera County Club each of the past two installments, placing tenth in 2024 and 20th in 2023.
Patrick Cantlay (+2800)
I’m going with a smaller card this week and staying at the top of the board with Patrick Cantlay as my second selection. This was actually my first click this week, as sad as that may be. Cantlay has a great track record at Riviera County Club. He placed fourth in 2024, third in 2023, 33rd in 2022, 14th in 2021 and 17th in 2020. He placed 14th last week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am and prior to that missed the cut at the Farmers Insurance Open but also placed 13th at The American Express. He is currently fifth on Tour in GIR%, seventh in bogey avoidance, ninth in scrambling, 12th in SG: APP, 13th in par-four average scoring, 33rd in good drives percentage, 39th in proximity to the hole from 150-plus yards, 40th in SG: ATG, 47th in sand saves percentage and 80th in SG: PUTT Poa.
Akshay Bhatia (+6000)
Bhatia has been a hot topic the last two weeks and as most will get frustrated with his inability to finish, this is a perfect spot for him. He held a multi-shot 54-hole lead at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am last week before ultimately finishing sixth. Prior to that he placed third at the WM Phoenix Open. He also missed the cut at both the Farmers Insurance Open and The American Express this season. He is currently 11th on Tour in SG: PUTT Poa, 13th in sand saves percentage, 39th in SG: ATG, 40th in GIR%, 41st in SG: APP, 43rd in good drives percentage, 45th in bogey avoidance, 58th in par-four average scoring, 78th in scrambling and 95th in proximity to the hole from 150-plus yards. He’ll be making his debut at Riviera County Club this week.
Shane Lowry (+7500)
Like Fleetwood, Lowry made his 2026 PGA Tour season debut last week at the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am where he placed eighth. He too spent some time on the DP World Tour earlier this calendar year, placing T26th at the Hero Dubai Desert Classic and T3rd at the Dubai Invitational. He’s played this event once prior over the past six seasons, placing 14th in 2023. Although a small sample size, he is currently first on Tour in par-four average scoring, fifth in scrambling, seventh in both good drives percentage and bogey avoidance, 13th in GIR%, 15th in SG: APP, 47th in sand saves percentage, 65th in SG: PUTT Poa, 109th in proximity to the hole from 150-plus yards and 126th in SG: ATG.
