Out of the Rough: The Standard Portland Classic (2026)

Major season has come to a close on the LPGA and after a three-week stint in Europe, the Tour returns state-side for this week’s The Standard Portland Classic.

This event is the Tour’s longest-running non-major tournament and is currently the only professional men’s or women’s golf event held in the Pacific Northwest.

Founded in 1972, this staple of the LPGA schedule will be held for the 54th time.

It once again will be held at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club and has been every year since 2013. This is also the 38th time that this venue has hosted this event overall. 

The Field

After being off for a week and teeing it up at one of the most historic events on the entire LPGA schedule, a star studded field is set to take to Columbia Edgewater Country Club.

World No. 2 Jeeno Thitikul leads the charge this week but will be joined by World No. 3 Haeran Ryu and World No. 5 Lottie Woad as the highest ranked golfers within the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings.

Ruoning Yin (No. 8,) Hannah Green (No. 9,) Mao Sago (No. 15,) Lauren Coughlin (No. 17,) 

Esther Henseleit (No. 19) and Aki Iwai (No. 20) are those within the top-20 of the Rolex Women’s World Golf Rankings to also be playing this week.

Iwai comes in as the defending champion as she dominated the field a season ago, winning by four strokes.

Other former winners of this event playing this week include Moriya Jutanugarn (2024,) Chanettee Wannasaen (2023,) Andrea Lee (2022) and Hannah Green (2019.)

The Course

The Macan Course at the Columbia Edgewater Country Club is no stranger to the LPGA.

It was founded in 1925 and was designed by Vernon Macan, hence the name. He became one of the Pacific Northwest’s most prolific golf architects. 

The venue as a whole has hosted many professional events on both the LPGA and PGA tours since its opening. The likes of Billy Casper and Jack Nicklaus won the Portland Open Invitational here in the 1960’s. 

It plays as a par-72 at 6,497 yards.

The course is routed through dense forest along the banks of the Columbia river. It’s laid out in two distinct loops. The front nine is sent in a counter-clockwise direction in the central portion of the property as the back nine is routed clockwise in the outer portion of the property.

In this routing, golfers will be hitting in every-which direction on the compass, bringing winds, which funnel down the Columbia River into play and in turn, ensuing havoc for even the world’s best. 

Off-the-tee golfers are greeted with tight, tee-lined fairways. The course itself is compact and in-turn, offers many doglegs.

Water comes into play on seven holes this week and there are 54 bunkers scattered throughout. The bunkers often guard the inside of dog-legs and the fronts of greens. The bunkers are also described as deep with sharp edges. 

Missing the fairway, if one can avoid the water, bunkers and trees, brings the thick rough into play that can be grown out to upwards of five-inches.

This goes without saying that accuracy off-the-tee is a must.

From there, golfers will take approach shots into greens that are slightly below the Tour average in terms of size.

These greens run roughly 11 on the Stimpmeter and are contoured in a way that any shot that misses the correct landing location will run off into collection areas. 

It features the standard breakdown of four par-fives, four par-threes and ten par-fours.

The Weather

As of the time of writing this, there is at most a five-percent chance of precipitation across all four days this week. Temperatures are set at just 56-degrees on Thursday, 57–degrees on Friday, 58-degrees on Saturday and 57-degrees on Sunday. Winds will reach upwards of ten miles-per-hour across the week with winds being even lower on Sunday. In all, it seems like a nice cool week of golf.

Pajaree Anannarukarn (+6500)

Although she missed the cut in her latest outing at the AIG Women’s Open., Anannarukarn comes into this week in some good form. She placed third at the ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open, 35th at The Amundi Evian Championship, 37th at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, 48th at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give and eighth at the U.S. Women’s Open. She also placed 13th at this event a season ago, 47th in 2024 and missed the cut in 2023. Anannarukarn is currently 12th on Tour in SG: APP, 39th in both SG: ATG and sand saves percentage, 42nd in par-five average scoring, 51st in driving accuracy percentage, 65th in birdie-or-better percentage, 68th in scrambling and 84th in SG: PUTT. 

Aditi Ashok (+15500)

Playing this event three times across the last four seasons, Ashok has been rather good here in Portland. She placed sixth a season ago, 22nd in 2024 and 36th in 2022. The form for Ashok is not good coming into this week however as she missed the cut at the AIG Women’s Open. placed 56th at The Amundi Evian Championship, missed the cut at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship and placed 24th at the Meijer LPGA Classic for Simply Give. On Tour, she is currently 12th in both SG: ATG and sand saves percentage, 15th in driving accuracy percentage, 27th in scrambling, 33rd in SG: PUTT, 76th in par-five average scoring, 81st in SG: APP and 112th in birdie-or-better percentage. 

Leona Maguire (+16500)

Maguire is currently 23rd on Tour in SG PUTT, 31st in driving accuracy percentage, 46th in SG: APP, 50th in par-five average scoring, 63rd in both SG: ATG and sand saves percentage, 70th in scrambling and 94th in birdie-or-better percentage. She missed the cut at the AIG Women’s Open but placed eighth at the ISPS HANDA Women’s Scottish Open across her last two outings. Maguire hasn’t played this event since 2022 where she missed the cut.
