The LPGA Tour heads from the Pacific Northwest to Canada, for this week’s CPKC Women’s Open.
This event serves as the national championship for Canada and has since its inception in 1973.
It held LPGA Tour major status between 1979 and 2000, eventually being replaced by the AIG Women’s Open.
The CPKC Women’s Open, like its male counterpart (RBC Canadian Open,) is a nomadic event.
Since 2018, a different golf course has played host.
This year, the Royal Mayfair Golf Club will host for the first time since 2007.
The Field
Although this event hasn’t held major status in well over three-decades, it still draws a star-studded field.
It will be led by World No. 1 Nelly Korda who will be looking to claim her first CPKC Women’s Open Title.
Hyo Joo Kim (No. 4,) Miyu Yamashita (No. 7,) Ruoning Yin (No. 8,) Hannah Green (No. 9) and Sei Young Kim (No. 10) join Korda as those within the top-ten of the Rolex Women’s World Gold Rankings.
Canada’s Brooke Henderson won her national open for the second time, topping Minjee Lee by a stroke at the Mississaugua Golf & Country Club a season ago. Henderson also won in 2018 at the Wascana Country Club.
Other former winners of this event playing this week include Megan Khang (2023,) Paula Reto (2022,) Jin Young Ko (2019,) Ariya Jutanugarn (2016) and Lydia Ko (2012, 2013 and 2015.)
The Course
Royal Mayfair Golf Club is in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
It earned its ‘Royal’ designation in 2005 by the Queen during Alberta’s centenary celebrations. It is one of just seven courses in Canada to have a ‘Royal’ designation.
Tucked away in Edmonton’s North Saskatchewan River Valley, this Stanley Thompson design opened in 1922.
It is set as a par-70, playing at 6,452 yards.
Royal Mayfair Golf Club is a parkland design, routed through thick woods. This offers a serene view staring down these heavily tree-lined fairways.
Mature trees frame the fairways, demanding for an accurate approach off-the-tee.
Bunkers are strategically placed to be brought into play on nearly every shot this week.
The greens here at Royal Mayfair Golf Club are known to run fast and true. They feature tricky undulations and subtle breaks along with challenging pin placements.
The greens are guarded by steep front bunkers that are set to penalize any errant approach shot.
